Chronic | History
Our chronicle is a fitting example of the typical journey of many Tyrolean gastronomy families who, through hard work, thrift, perseverance, and full personal commitment, have created exemplary establishments.
Anyone strolling through the Apartment-Hotel Alte Schmiede**** today, with all its comfort and tradition, built for "discerning guests," can hardly imagine how it all began more than 50 years ago. Back then, the son of the village blacksmith, Adolf Purtscher, married Birgit from Prutz, and in 1974, he fulfilled her heartfelt wish: In December, they opened the "Schmiedestüberl" on the grounds of the old smithy—a restaurant that the two of them ran entirely on their own.
Under the most challenging conditions, they managed to get the business up and running, even though at the time, the facilities were limited to two guest rooms with wood stoves, a water kettle on the stove for hot water, a washbasin with a water jug, and a bucket for wastewater disposal.
Meanwhile, Adolf Purtscher expanded his farm and worked at his sawmill—until 1977, when he tore down his new farm building and began constructing the new house, fully transitioning into the hotel business. That year, a second establishment, the "Schmiedekeller," was added to the Schmiedestüberl, and in December 1978, the hotel "Alte Schmiede" with 50 guest beds was opened. Over the years, it was rebuilt, expanded, and upgraded until the 4-star hotel "Alte Schmiede" reached its current capacity of over 120 beds.
Once again, Adolf Purtscher rediscovered his love for agriculture when he established the "Schmiede-Ferienhof" in 1990, offering guests a "hands-on experience of farm life."
The Apartment-Hotel Alte Schmiede**** exudes the typical family atmosphere of a house furnished in Tyrolean style. All apartments, suites, and comfort rooms are tastefully and comfortably designed, cozy yet sophisticated. The layout is divided into three separate complexes, each with its own easily manageable dining areas, fireplace lounge, house bar, and much more...
The true size of the house is barely noticeable, which significantly contributes to its cozy ambiance.
In 2016, daughter Sonja Purtscher took over the Apartment-Hotel Alte Schmiede**** and has since run it with fresh ideas and the same passion that has always been the foundation of our house. With her dedication and clear vision for tradition, Sonja successfully preserves what has been proven while introducing new accents. Under her leadership, the Apartment-Hotel Alte Schmiede**** remains a place where guests can feel completely at home and experience true Tyrolean hospitality. Look forward to a stay that harmoniously combines the old and the new, providing unforgettable moments.
